Currently I am going bananas over Coconut Oil! I have been using it the past year and it has been my money saving beauty essential cream. Aside from being a cooking ingredient, it is a wonderful natural beauty product that is packed with so many wonderful natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, anti-bacterial and hydrating properties that make it truly unique. Here are my five ways to utilize coconut oil in your beauty regiment.
I read an article on one of my favorite celebrity hair stylists, Jen Atkin. Jen Atkin, who is Kardashions hair stylist, suggested using coconut oil as a hydrating hair mask. She recommended if you are in need for a quick deep hair conditioner treatment apply coconut oil to the mid shaft of hair to the ends for around 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition. She suggested a great time to do this treatment is when your working out. I tried this and fell in love with it! My hair feels stronger and thicker. I was concerned about it feeling greasy, but it was not at all. It is a wonderful natural hair mask for the winter dry months.
Eye Makeup Remover
One of my Facebook friends posted how she started using coconut oil for eye makeup remover and loved it. So I tried it and I am hooked! It does a fantastic job gently removing my waterproof mascara and other eye makeup. It not only removes my makeup beautifully, it also moisturizes and has smoothed out my under eye wrinkles. When I initially started using it as eye makeup remover I was concerned it would make my skin greasy and my makeup would smear. However, for me, the coconut oil has not made my under eyes greasy or made my makeup smear. My eye makeup actually applies on even smoother now because of the coconut oil! My under eyes feel soft, conditioned and tighter. I am very happy about this discovery, because it has been nice not spending extra money on eye makeup remover products. Cha Ching!!
Coconut Oil Body Lotion
I love using coconut oil as body lotion. It is the perfect balance of moisture and glow! I add essential oils to it sometimes too. A great time to do this is right before bed. Lavender and peppermint are wonderful essential oils to add to coconut oil. They are very soothing and relaxing for bedtime. Another thing I learned is how awesome it is for my callused heels. I will apply it on my heels for a couple nights right before bed and in the morning my heels look conditioned and the flaky skin disappears. My heels are soft and smooth. Trust me, you need to try this!
So I just tried this a month ago and I cannot believe I did not think of this sooner! It is the best shaving cream I have ever used. The first initial thought I had while trying this was I really liked how after applying the coconut oil to my legs, it did not wash away when water landed on my skin. So I do not have to avoid my legs getting splashed by water while shaving. The only problem I ran into was the razor would get plugged up easy by the coconut oil. So what I do now is I keep a washcloth in the shower and I wipe the razor on it. Works very well. I am telling you, try this! Your legs will feel so soft, look moisturized, and have a sexy glow!
Coconut Oil Acne Mask/Deep Cleanser
This past winter month I discovered the exfoliating coconut oil/baking soda mask. I have adult acne and during these dry winter months my skin is dry and flaky. So I was very interested trying this mask because the ingredients are great for acne and moisture. It also stated that coconut oil is natural antibacterial and anti-fungal. So I trusted what I read and decided to try this natural mask. I am very impressed with the end results. It feels like an enzyme mask one receives during a facial, but not as strong. I apply it to my face, scrub for around 1 minute,(avoid the eyes) and let it sit for around 3-5 minutes, then rinse. My skin feels smooth, soft, and it glows. It moisturized my skin and breaked up the dead skin cells. For optimal results, I recommend using this mask once a week.
Below is the recipe for the Coconut Oil Acne Mask.
You must know your skin type in order to know how much of these two ingredients you have to use.
Sensitive Skin: 2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil/ 1Tablespoon Baking Soda
Normal Skin: 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil/1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
Mix together and apply to face and lips. Do not apply around eyes. Gently rub your face for a minute and let set a few minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
You can make a larger amount and store it in a jar. It should stay good for a few weeks. Keep at room temperature. Below is the recipe for the jar portion.
½ Cup Coconut Oil
¼ Cup Baking Soda
